Writing by Dominique Lewis

With a white tee and light blue jeans he stood on the sidewalk. He stood at about 6’3’’. He had perfect olive skin and short black hair. He stood on the sidewalk looking, like he was looking for someone or something. It was night out and the street light above him flickered annoyingly. The sidewalk on which he was standing was across from a park.

He sat on a bench close to where he was standing and sighed. The wind began to blow. A swing in the park began to slowly sway back and forth and the trees and bushes began to rustle. He began to look down and at the dirty littered street. The wind began to pick up. The wind made cans and papers roll. Looking back at the playground taking in the nighttime scenery. The big green trees surrounded by smaller green trees and bushes like a forest were all rustling more. The swings that were swinging in unison and the merry go round was starting to spin. The wind was starting to irritate his eyes so he squinted them. Rats started to come from their hiding spots and began scurrying around to look around for food. It was getting cold. As he continued watching everything he began to close his eyes and let the sounds keep his attention. The sounds of the swings and the trees and the wind and cans on their own would make horrible noises but while they were all going in unison they make a very soothing sound. Then he heard footsteps and raised his head to look for the person who was walking towards him. Then he saw her.
She was walking down the street when she saw him and she got happy but then she saw that he was alone and wondered what had happened. As she got closer he raised his head and began looking around. Then he saw her and he stood up.
“Where is everyone else?” she asked
“ I don’t know, I thought that they all chickened out.” he replied
“Oh…well we can wait a little bit longer.”
They sat down on the bench and sat in an awkward silence waiting. He tried to make some conversation but she wouldn’t participate. Truth be told neither one of them were really outgoing and neither one of them knew each other before yesterday when their mutual friends introduced them and proposed plans for tonight. Of course those mutual friends were nowhere to be found and had left them here alone.
He began to whistle a show tune and she began to get annoyed so she told him to stop. Then it started raining hard. They cursed in unison. She suggested that it would be a good idea to go home but he said that they could go sit under one of those covered seating areas in the park. Since she didn’t really want to go running home in the rain she went with him to the park. She knew that she shouldn’t have come but she also knew that if she hadn’t come then her friends would have never let it go and teased her about it forever. But then again where were those friends that she came for?
